TripCost.gr
A route planner built around what the journey really costs.
TripCost combines real driving distance, travel time, fuel consumption and Greek toll costs to show what a road trip will actually cost—and whether a cheaper route is worth the additional time or distance.

THE CHALLENGE
Distance was only part of the question.
Standard map tools are excellent at showing how to get somewhere. They do not always explain what the journey will cost once fuel and tolls are included—or whether avoiding tolls is still cheaper after the additional distance and driving time are taken into account.
TripCost needed to turn route information into a clearer financial decision without making the calculation feel complicated.
THE PRODUCT IDEA
From route calculation to decision making.
The experience was organised around three questions a driver needs answered before choosing a route.
- 01
ROUTE
Real distance and travel time
The journey is calculated using actual road routes rather than a straight-line estimate.
- 02
COST
Fuel, tolls and the complete total
Vehicle consumption, fuel price and route-specific tolls come together in one clear cost breakdown.
- 03
DECISION
A useful comparison between the options
Alternative and avoid-tolls routes are compared through money, time and distance.
THE CORE EXPERIENCE
One search. The full cost of the journey.
The user enters an origin and destination, confirms the vehicle and fuel settings, and explicitly requests a calculation. TripCost then returns the route distance, estimated driving time, fuel use, fuel cost, toll cost and complete journey total.
When another route is available, the product presents both options in the same context. The user can see how much money may be saved, as well as the additional kilometres, fuel and time that saving requires.
ROUTE COMPARISON
Cheaper isn’t always better.
A route with fewer tolls can still require more fuel, more kilometres and considerably more time. TripCost compares the complete journey rather than a single cost, helping the user decide whether the saving is genuinely worthwhile.
GREEK TOLL CALCULATION
Built around how Greek toll roads actually work.
TripCost maintains its own official-source-backed Greek toll data, covering approximately 207 physical toll locations. The calculation follows the ordered route and considers how each toll connects to the journey, including mainline stations, lateral or entry tolls and special road infrastructure.
Simple geographical proximity was not accurate enough: a route can pass close to a toll station without actually using that road or entrance. The matching logic therefore considers the route itself, reducing false toll detections and producing a more useful cost estimate.
PRODUCT ARCHITECTURE
Live APIs only when they add value.
TripCost requests live routing data when the user explicitly asks for a journey calculation. That returned route is then reused for the cost breakdown, round-trip calculations, route comparison and different result views.
Fuel calculations can be updated locally, while destination browsing and curated route content use TripCost’s own structured data. Presentation changes do not trigger another routing request.
One explicit calculation. One fetched route result. Multiple useful ways to understand it.
This keeps the experience responsive while giving the product tighter control over external API usage and infrastructure costs.
SEARCH & DISCOVERY
Built to be useful before the calculator opens.
TripCost is both an interactive travel tool and a structured source of route and destination information. Its registry contains approximately 1,968 Greek destinations, supporting curated destination pages, route pages and dedicated travel-cost utilities.
The architecture separates useful, structured content from arbitrary live calculations. User-generated route results do not automatically become thousands of thin search pages. Instead, more than 1,000 structured search pages are supported by deliberate content and internal linking across the Greek and selective English experience.
SELECTED SCREENS
The route, the numbers and the decision.
Six selected views will show the calculation itself, the resulting cost breakdown and how the experience adapts across devices.
TECHNICAL FOUNDATION
Routing services, shaped into a focused product.
TripCost is built with Next.js, React and TypeScript. Google Places supports location discovery, while Google Routes provides live road distance, duration and route alternatives. TripCost’s own deterministic fuel and Greek toll engines turn that routing data into the final journey-cost calculation.

- Custom Toll Engine
The same bilingual architecture supports the interactive product, structured destination content and controlled route pages in Greek and English. Google Analytics 4 and Search Console provide production usage and search visibility data.
THE RESULT
A travel-cost tool, not just another calculator.
The result is a live digital product that brings routing, fuel, tolls and route comparison into one decision-making experience. TripCost helps drivers understand not only how to reach their destination, but what the journey will really cost and whether a cheaper alternative is worth the trade-off.
Behind the interface, structured destination data, controlled search pages and cost-conscious API usage give the product a foundation that can grow without turning every visit into an unnecessary live routing request.
